Eight Uses For Porcelain Dental Veneers
This popular cosmetic treatment offers you more than just a whiter smile
Thanks to a growing number of TV celebrities who have acknowledged that they have had veneers fitted, more people are now familiar with this popular cosmetic dental treatment. Whilst they do sometimes require invasive dentistry in order for them to be fitted, they also offer a number of other benefits that a teeth whitening procedure sometimes doesn’t.
In fact, they are a lot more flexible than many people realise and are beneficial in ways other than just for whitening teeth. We thought then, that we would use today’s Blue Sky Dental blog to explain eight of the most common circumstances where teeth veneers are used.
1 – Whitening teeth
This is the one that they are best known for. Although the tooth whitening procedure is the most popular, it is not always the most appropriate treatment if you have badly stained teeth. Some improvement might be seen, but the effect may not be as significant as the patient hoped for if their teeth are badly stained or discoloured. By replacing the affected surface enamel with a high quality porcelain veneer, we can provide even those with badly stained teeth with a long lasting whiter smile.
2 – Shape enhancement
Veneers can be used not only to change the colour of a tooth but to reshape them.Teeth that are irregularly shaped, worn down or chipped can all benefit from the fitting of a porcelain veneer. This is an excellent way to have an even and attractive smile again.
3 – Gap closures
Most commonly used where a ‘diastema’ is present (when a gap occurs between the top two front teeth), veneers can be used to close these gaps cosmetically. You will need to be examined by one of our experienced Chelmsford dentists though as not all cases will be suitable for this and you may need to have orthodontic treatment instead.
4 – Lengthening teeth
In an ideal world, all of our teeth would be the same length but unfortunately this is not always the case and a smaller tooth or two can really spoil a smile. Whether a tooth is shorter than those around it due to wear or simply due to genetics, veneers can be applied to enhance the length so that it matches those around it giving you a natural looking smile.
5 – Repairing chips and/or cracks
It is one thing having whiter teeth, but if they also have cracks or chips in them, whitening them will only serve to highlight these flaws. Depending on the extent of the cracks or chips, you might also suffer from problems like sensitive teeth or a rough surface that cuts the soft tissue of your mouth. With the use of veneers, these problems can be avoided and you can have a great looking smile into the bargain.
6 – Cosmetic teeth straightening
As with the closure of spaces previously mentioned, whether veneers are suitable for your own situation will need to be assessed by a dentist. Most teeth straightening will need to be done using orthodontics, but in some cases the appearance of mild crookedness can be corrected using veneers. This will not actually straighten the teeth but can give the appearance that they have.
7 – Cover up defects
Even white teeth can have ‘defects’ which detract from their appearance. These needn’t be just chips and cracks either. Some enamel can appear to be pitted or rough, especially if some erosion has started to occur. Veneers are a great way to give a uniform appearance to your teeth and help to improve your smile.
8 – Provide a younger looking smile
Finally, even if you have looked after your teeth well in your younger years, time will have an impact on the appearance of your teeth. The custom porcelain veneers that we provide at our Chelmsford dental clinic are a great way to help you recreate the younger looking smile of years gone by. They can be adjusted to the colour you want too, so you can improve their appearance without having a brilliant white smile .. unless you want that of course.
We hope that this blog has helped you to understand the flexibility that veneers can offer in providing you with a more attractive smile. They can also help protect your teeth from discomfort and potentially even further damage where enamel damage or erosion has occurred.
