Is It Really Worth Having Cosmetic Dentistry?

We look at what can be gained by having a more attractive smile.

If you have discussed the idea of having a cosmetic dental treatment with friends or colleagues, there is a good chance that someone will have argued that it is expensive and perhaps even unnecessary. It is true that they do cost more than restorative treatments that you may have had on the NHS but this is because cosmetic treatments aren’t subsidised by the government. This doesn’t mean that these treatments don’t offer good value for money though, as many of our Chelmsford patients will happily attest.

While some cosmetic treatments are largely affordable for most patients, for example, teeth whitening, others may cost a little more. Having nice looking teeth might seem to be an ‘optional extra’ for some, but the benefits of cosmetic dentistry might be more significant than you think. In today’s Blue Sky Dental blog, we are going to take a look at what you might expect to gain from some of our more popular treatments.

Teeth whitening

Two of the immediate benefits of having a tooth whitening procedure is that it is non-invasive and also one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments available. Having said that, no one is going to want to have one if the results aren’t worth it. The good news is that this treatment can whiten your teeth very significantly and greatly improve the quality of your smile. Patients that have this treatment are usually very pleased with what they see upon completion of the treatment.

The degree of whiteness that can be achieved will depend on a number of factors, including how badly stained your teeth are. We can adjust the treatment to meet your needs, from providing the whitest white attainable to a subtle improvement in their colour, allowing you to decide how you want them to look.

The obvious benefit of all this is that you will have more attractive teeth. That isn’t where the benefits end though. Many people tell us that they feel not only more attractive but more confident too. This is likely to be picked up by those around you. This single procedure could really change not only your smile, but, potentially, your life too. A nice smile is appealing to most people and can be really beneficial in situations such as when dating or when being interviewed for a job.

Dental veneers

The teeth whitening treatment mentioned above will make great improvements to the colour of your teeth, but if you have even slightly imperfect teeth, then it will not correct that. If your teeth have small chips or cracks then the best way to correct this is to have porcelain dental veneers fitted at our highly-regarded Chelmsford dentists. This not only has the benefit of whitening your teeth and improving their overall aesthetics, but the effects of the treatment will last for approximately ten years providing that you take care of them correctly, before they need to be replaced.

As with a teeth whitening procedure, you will not only have a more attractive smile but there is every chance that your confidence will increase too.

‘Invisible’ braces

Dental veneers can be used for some minor orthodontic corrections but most people will need to have orthodontic treatment in order to have their teeth straightened. This can put some people off as it is often a lengthy process, although some cosmetic braces do offer faster treatments for very minor corrections. For the purpose of this blog though we will look at those who require more significant correction.

Traditional braces use a combination of wires and brackets which are attached to the teeth and are gradually adjusted to straighten them. This is problematic, not only because of how they look but also because it can result in food becoming trapped in them. This and the fact that cleaning teeth when wearing  braces is more difficult, means that problems like tooth decay and gum disease are more likely.

By using ‘invisible braces’ these problems can be avoided. These come in the form of ‘trays’ that fit over your teeth and are made from a medical grade transparent plastic and are produced from impressions and scans that we take of your teeth. You will receive a number of these, with each being worn for a period of time before the next one is used to replace it. Gradually, these correct the position of your teeth until we have the desired results. A key benefit for wearers is that, unlike traditional braces, the trays can be removed when you want to eat and when you clean your teeth.

By using this method, as opposed to traditional braces, they will be barely visible to those around you and the convenience of being able to remove them when eating is very good news, especially as these may need to be worn for a year or more. Once completed, you will be left with straight and even teeth that are easier to keep clean and are less likely to trap food between them, as well as having a more attractive set of teeth to show when you smile.

As you can see, having cosmetic dental treatment can make a big difference to your life and, while there is a cost involved, we feel that the long term benefits are worth it, especially as we have payment plans available that can help you to spread the cost.
