Oral Surgery is an internationally recognised specialty within dentistry. Whilst a dentist is qualified to work on teeth, an accredited Oral Surgeon is one who is fully versed in the diagnosis and treatment (including performing surgery) on the soft tissue of the head, mouth, gums, neck, jaw and teeth.
In Britain, a qualified dentist must undergo three years of additional training in order to gain the status of Oral Surgeon. The European Union recognises oral surgeons as having their own field of expertise, a standard which does not exist in other parts of the world.
