What Are Dental Implants?

Replacing Missing Teeth In Chelmsford, Essex

It is widely accepted that most of us would prefer to save our natural teeth, which is readily achievable with excellent oral hygiene and preventative care. However, tooth-loss can happen because of injury, dental disease, certain medications, medical conditions and diet. If you have lost a tooth, there have long been a wide variety of treatments for missing teeth available at your local dentist, including dentures and bridges. These treatment options have reached a high-standard but they are not the most modern option currently available.

Blue Sky Dental are proud to offer what is now considered by many to be the ‘gold standard’ in tooth replacement and dental restoration - dental implants.

Dental implants are at the cutting-edge of restorative dentistry, able to support bridges, dentures and individual crowns. These incredible devices completely replace the tooth-root and, with the aid of a crown or bridge, the tooth above the gum-line. This enables patients to enjoy a restoration that looks, acts and feels as much like natural-teeth as is currently possible.

Blue Sky Dental are extremely happy to offer this advanced treatment to patients here at our Chelmsford Clinic

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an innovative, small rod-like device which acts as a direct replacement for the part of the tooth that sits beneath the gum line. In essence an implant is the equivalent of the missing tooth root. Once healed and fused with the jawbone, the implant provides an incredibly secure base for the additional parts of the implant-prosthesis above the gum line. As well as the actual implant which replaces the tooth root, the term 'dental implant' can also describe the abutment which is the part that connects the implant to the tooth replacement, and the tooth replacement itself which could be a crown, implant-retained dentures or a bridge.

The purpose of an implant is to replicate the previous tooth-root as much as possible, helping to slow the jawbone degrading over time, and to help keep teeth replacements as secure as possible.

What are Dental Implants made of?

Dental implants are primarily made of durable titanium. Sometimes additional metals are combined with the titanium to improve the strength. Only materials that are high-quality and designed to be compatible with the body are used to make dental implants.

Thank you very much for all your hard work. I hadn’t had teeth for 2 years and now with these implants I can eat steak, there is nothing I cannot eat. In fact I have put on weight! Thank you again

Dental Implants With Crowns, Bridges And Dentures

The simplest form of a dental implant is one implant replacing one missing tooth with one crown. You can also support two missing teeth using just one implant, or a few implants, depending on the placement of the implant and the position of the missing teeth. The most natural-feeling option is to replace each tooth with one implant, but the most cost-effective options often involve bridges or dentures supported by 2-8 strategically placed implants.

Implant-Retained Bridges

Implant-retained bridges are a great option for patients with more than one missing tooth in a sequence. We will usually use a fixed bridge which does not need to be removed to be cleaned. This provides the most secure option for your dental replacements, and there is no need to do any work to the surrounding natural teeth as is usually needed with traditional bridges.

Implant-Retained Dentures

Traditional dentures can be problematic, even when fitted and created by the most expert dentists.

They work using suction and sometimes denture glue to hold a partial or full denture in place, which doesn't guarantee that they will stay put. They can also be perpetually uncomfortable for some people, and they might need regular replacement as the shape of the mouth changes over time, especially when teeth are missing. Eating can sometimes be a real challenge with a traditional denture.

Regardless of the quality of the denture, the fit will always be the most optimum with implant retention because there is less gum coverage and plate involved. Instead the support comes from the implant which is fixed to the jawbone. The key difference between implant-retained dentures and implant-retained bridges is that the dentures are removable for maintenance and cleaning.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The treatment process is individual to you but usually involves the following:

  • A thorough consultation and assessment of the oral health and environment.
  • A scan to assess jawbone quality and for placement planning.
  • Bone grafting is completed, if necessary.
  • Implant placement.
  • Healing of the implant and the bone, which can take up to 3 or more months.
  • Once healing is complete, the gum is adjusted and the abutments are added.
  • Once the gum has healed, we can add the permanent crowns or other restorations.

Why Dental Implants Could Be Right For You

Implants are the most popular option for tooth replacement because they create the most natural looking and feeling results currently available within modern dentistry.

You may choose implant treatment to avoid the following issues:

  • The face can become hollow and age as the jawbone degrades without the tooth root.
  • The smile does not look aesthetically pleasing.
  • Eating is affected.
  • A loose denture affecting your confidence or quality of life.
  • Any remaining teeth move and collapse, becoming misaligned.
  • Speech is affected.
  • Confidence can be affected because of the issues associated with missing teeth.

Dental implants can help you overcome all of the above issues, providing a sophisticated treatment designed to replicate the look, function and feel of natural teeth.
