Our Chelmsford dentists can straighten your teeth in a discreet and convenient manner
It probably feels as though your life has been on hold for the last year or so, with the various restrictions and lack of opportunities to socialise and be entertained. Slowly though, we now seem to be coming towards the end of what has been a tough time for many of us. We know that dental issues may have been a concern for some too, and all of us at Blue Sky Dental are doing our best to see as many patients as we can, prioritising those most in need.
As we slowly start to return to normal, some of you will be thinking about things you want to achieve in the future. Some of these may be short term, such as having our first drink in a pub for quite some time. Others might be looking at longer term goals including those which will improve how we look and feel. These might include some cosmetic teeth treatments.
Although some dental treatments are almost instant, such as the popular teeth whitening procedures, those wishing to improve their appearance by having their teeth straightened may require orthodontic treatment that could last for a year or more.
The ‘problem’ with braces
Most of us will probably know someone who wore braces when they were younger. As children, we may have been less than kind to those with a mouthful of metal wires and swore that we would never wear them. The issue though is that orthodontic treatment is the main way to have attractive straight teeth. Cosmetic dentistry now provides a way of doing this which is both discrete and practical.
One of the most popular teeth straightening systems that we use at our Chelmsford cosmetic practice is Invisalign. This system avoids the use of metal and other generally visible materials and uses a system of transparent trays that fit securely over the teeth. It is especially suitable for cases where a number of teeth need adjusting or where there is significant crookedness of the teeth. For more minor cases, such as a small overlap of the front teeth, it may be possible to use a faster acting method. The first job of our dentists, is to determine the best orthodontic system to use for your own situation.
Invisalign consultation
The first step is to make an appointment to have your Invisalign consultation. This will entail having your teeth examined, along with a conversation to see what you are hoping to achieve. The dentist will then, in consultation with you, decide which is the most appropriate braces system for your needs. For many significant adjustments, Invisalign is likely to be the ideal choice. In order for the patient to be able to see the improvements that can be made to your smile, we are able to take impressions of your teeth, and from these we can produce digital images of how your teeth can look following your orthodontic treatment. On seeing these, most patients can’t wait to get started so that they can have a smile to be proud of.
Once you have decided to commence the treatment, we will send the impressions to an external laboratory where the trays will be made. This ensures that not only are they discrete when worn, but fit securely and comfortably as well.
Each tray should be worn for 20 hours a day and removed only when eating food and when you clean your teeth. We will provide you with full information, including cleaning instructions, when we issue them to you. The fact that the trays are almost invisible and that they can be removed for eating and when cleaning the teeth are a real benefit for wearers. Not only does it make life more convenient, but also reduces the risk of problems like tooth decay and gum disease which can happen with wired braces when food becomes trapped. You will need to keep the trays clean as well as your teeth and we will provide instructions on their care.
There should be no side effects as such when wearing Invisalign but there are a few things to consider when you initially wear them. Your body will detect them as a ‘foreign object’ and may try to dislodge them through the production of more saliva than normal. This is to be expected and will return to normal soon afterwards. A few patients may also find that it affects their speech a little until they become accustomed to them. These are minor issues though, and compared to some of the inconveniences of traditional braces are certainly nothing to worry about.
If you are unhappy with your smile because you have crooked or uneven teeth, now is an ideal time to start thinking about correcting this. The place to start is by booking an Invisalign consultation at our Chelmsford dental practice adn we invite you to do this by calling the friendly Blue Sky team on 01245 211070.
