Endodontics – Saving Infected Teeth In Chelmsford

A look at the role of the endodontist at Blue Sky Dental.

At our Chelmsford dental practice, we are proud to have a number of specialists as part of our team. This means that we can offer our patients first class, complex dental care for all their needs.

In today’s blog, we take a look at the role of one of the specialists, the endodontist.

The word ‘endodontist’ originates from ancient Greek words meaning ‘inside’ and ‘tooth’. This role then, involves dealing with dental problems that originate within the tooth. The most common of these being when the inner pulp becomes infected.

Root canal treatment

The most common procedure carried out by the endodontist is a root canal procedure. This is a highly effective way of treating a tooth where the materials in the root have become infected. Whilst antibiotics could ease the symptoms for a little while, the problem would eventually re-occur and a root canal procedure is the only procedure that can resolve this problem permanently. The procedure itself involves the removal of the top part of the tooth so that the dentist can access the infected pulp. This will then be removed and the hollow roots cleaned to remove any remaining infection. The canals will then be filled and a crown attached to the top of the tooth to re-establish strength and a natural appearance.

Patients will need to be aware that, during the procedure, the nerves are removed, along with other soft materials. This means that, although the tooth will be sufficiently strong for everyday use, it will not experience sensation as other teeth will. The result of this is that it is much easier to bite down too hard with the tooth so patients should exercise caution when using a root canal treated tooth for eating harder foods.
