All On 4 – An Alternative To Dentures

A dental implant procedure to replace full arch dentures.

Whilst we all hope to keep a full set of teeth throughout our life, it is not unusual to lose a tooth or two, whether through decay or accident. For an unfortunate few though, a full arch of teeth can be lost. This can be through neglect, accident or even as a side effect of medical treatment.

When a full arch of teeth are lost, there are a limited number of options available to replace the missing teeth. The use of dental bridges, for example, is not possible as they require other teeth to attach to. The most common method used in this situation is for dentures to be made for the patient. Whilst these do offer an aesthetic replacement, and, to some degree, a practical one; for many people they are far from ideal.

Denture problems

Whilst some patients are completely happy with dentures, others find them somewhat uncomfortable and inconvenient. Sore gums are a common complaint and some find that they are not very stable in the mouth and move around at times. From a medical perspective too, the loss of a tooth root causes the bone in the jaw to thin. This is one of the factors that contributes to loose fitting dentures.

All On 4 treatment

There is an alternative to dentures which we offer at Blue Sky Dental, that offers a realistic replacement option and provides stability and convenience too. Although the use of individual implants to replace each missing tooth would be cost prohibitive for most people, a procedure called All On 4 is available which usually uses just 4 dental implants to support a fixed bridge. In some cases, it may be necessary to use five or six implants, but for many people, four is sufficient. The implants are placed as follows. The two regular implants are placed towards the front of the mouth at a ninety degree angle. The two at the rear of the mouth are specially designed to be placed at around a forty five degree angle. The bespoke design often allows them to be placed even where bone has thinned and without a prior bone graft. The particular way of placing the rear implants also provides a significant amount of extra stability.

On to these newly placed dental implants, a fixed bridge is attached straight away. This means, in effect, that a patient can have a full arch of replacement teeth placed in a single visit. For this reason, this procedure is also sometimes known as ‘teeth in a day’.

Although it is advisable to eat softer foods initially, due to potential localised soreness, it shouldn’t be long before the patient is eating their regular diet with full confidence in their new replacement teeth.
