Ready For The Summer Season?

Getting your smile in shape for the sunny months ahead!

Perhaps we are being a little optimistic as a few days of sunshine at Easter does not a summer make. However, given the heat of last year, let’s hope that we will see pleasant weather against this summer. In preparation for this, our Blue Sky Dental patients might wish to use this time to get their smile into shape in order to look their best for the warmer summer months.

We recommend two stages to achieve this, starting with making sure that your teeth and gum are healthy. There is little point in having cosmetic dental treatment if your mouth is in poor health. Once any problems have been treated and any damaged teeth restored, we can then move on to looking at the best way to improve your smile.

Healthy teeth and gums

Hopefully, all of our Chelmsford patients are in the habit of seeing the dentist on a regular basis. If so, then you should be able to move relatively quickly to cosmetic treatment. Not everyone will be this diligent though, and, if you haven’t seen your dentist for a while, now would be a good time to do so. If you need to have any fillings and are aiming to have a nicer smile too, then do mention this to the dentist who will be able to discuss using white fillings instead of the dull coloured amalgam ones that are widely used.

Your general treatment should not end there though, and to make sure that your teeth are as healthy as possible, do make an appointment to see the hygienist. They will provide a thorough clean that is excellent for removing surface staining, along with  hardened bacteria (tartar) that can cause problems such as gum disease.

Stage two – cosmetic dentistry

Having ensured that  your teeth and gums are as healthy as they can be, we can now start to consider how to improve their appearance. There are a wide range of procedures that are available to replace missing teeth (bridges, dental implants and dentures), as well as a number of different orthodontic treatments (Invisalign and Six Month Smiles) for those with crooked smiles. For the purpose of this blog though, we will take a look at some of the ways that we can improve the appearance of your teeth in a shorter space of time and certainly in time for summer around the corner.

Whiter teeth

Anyone looking to improve their smile will almost certainly want their teeth to look whiter than they currently are. If you have had some of the surface staining removed during a scale and polish with our hygienist, you may still feel that they are not white enough. This could be due to heavier staining, or perhaps due to discolouration of the inner part of the tooth that occurs with age.

The best way to improve the whiteness further is with our custom home teeth whitening treatments. These are provided in consultation with you to make sure we satisfy your requirements. Some patients want their teeth to look as white as possible, whilst others may be looking for more moderate improvements. Whatever your choice, we can customise the treatment to meet your own specific needs.

The treatment itself is straightforward to perform and you should start to see some improvement within a few days, with the full results being visible in around a fortnight.

For those with more severe staining, dental veneers may provide a more successful solution. These can also be used to replace surface enamel that has been damaged by chips or cracks and can last for ten years or more before needing to be replaced. It should be noted that, unlike a teeth whitening procedure, having veneers fitted is an invasive treatment that requires some surface enamel being removed from the teeth. For this reason, we suggest trying a whitening treatment first to see if that satisfies your needs, and if not, we can then investigate other options.

Going forwards

Although much can be achieved by using the cosmetic procedures on offer at our Chelmsford dental practice, our ever popular teeth whitening is not a one off treatment that achieves permanent results. Your newly whitened teeth will eventually start to discolour again as surface staining builds up, and the inner part will also become discoloured again in time. You can help to delay this through diligent brushing and perhaps moderating the staining foods and drinks within your diet. When your teeth eventually do shows signs of discolouring again, you  can have the whitening treatment repeated safely.

Teeth whitening is very safe in the hands of qualified dental personnel but you may find some additional mild sensitivity immediately after the treatment. This is rare and usually temporary, typically just a few days, before returning to normal.

If you would like to use the start of the warmer weather to set you on the way to a more attractive smile, why not arrange to have an initial consultation with one of our cosmetic dental team here in Chelmsford? You can make an appointment by calling Blue Sky Dental on 01245 211070.
