2020 – A New Year, A New Smile

Mark the start of this new decade with a smile makeover at Blue Sky Dental!

Great smileFirst of all, we would like to wish all of our Chelmsford patients a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. We hope that you are rested and ready for the year ahead following the Christmas break.

As always, in addition to offering first class oral care to all of our patients, we will be continuing to blog about dental issues that will hopefully help you to have a healthy and better looking smile for this year and those that will follow.

As the new year often signals a new start for many people, we thought that we would start 2020 with a look at a few options that you may wish to consider to give your smile a boost for the coming months.

See the hygienist

This might not seem the most obvious place to start when looking at ways to improve the way that your teeth look, but there are a couple of good reasons why this is an important place to start.

First of all, the most important aspect of your teeth and gums is their health. If you have tooth decay or gum disease, there is no point in having a cosmetic dental procedure. White teeth that are decaying or a dental implant placed into infected gum tissue is both a waste of time and money. We will always make sure that your mouth is healthy before we carry out a cosmetic treatment.

Secondly, seeing the hygienist is a good first step if you want whiter looking teeth. Whilst it can’t change the appearance of teeth that are yellow due to discolouration of the inner part of the tooth, the scale and polish procedure carried out by the hygienist will remove a great deal of surface staining whilst also removing hardened bacteria from the teeth and gums. This is a great and very affordable way of giving your mouth a real boost, both from a health point of view and an aesthetic one.

Teeth whitening

Most practices that offer cosmetic dentistry will almost certainly see an increase in appointments for this treatment in the new year, and our Chelmsford dentists are no exception.  This affordable and home based treatment is a great way to whiten teeth that have either become stained over time, or have naturally darkened in colour over the years, often leaving them looking a little dull and yellow in appearance.

Our custom designed treatment offers a significant improvement in the appearance of your teeth in around two weeks of wearing the whitening trays that we will provide, taken from impressions of your own teeth for added comfort and safety.

Orthodontics

It is one thing having white teeth, but if they are uneven, this will only highlight the fact. For this reason, many patients who are seeking long term aesthetic improvement to their teeth will have them straightened before they have them whitened. It will be necessary to have a proper assessment to determine the best method to use for your individual situation as different orthodontics can be used according to the needs of the patient. Two of the most widely used at Blue Sky Dental are Invisalign and the Six Month Smiles systems.

Invisalign is more widely used when a number of teeth, including those towards the rear of the mouth, need to be straightened. It is very different to the dental braces that you might be familiar with and uses a series of transparent plastic trays instead of metal wires and brackets. These are worn over the teeth, gradually adjusting the position of the teeth progressively with each tray. The transparency of the trays make these a discreet way to straighten teeth. The trays can also be removed when eating food and for cleaning the teeth.

Six Month Smiles orthodontics often act more quickly than Invisalign as they are designed to straighten only the single rooted teeth at the front of the mouth, sometimes called the ‘social six’.  Although these use more traditional methods, albeit with finer tooth coloured materials, they only take six months, on average, to achieve their aims. For very minor corrective issues, the time taken can be much less.

Veneers

Although dental veneers can be used for minor orthodontic issues, such as a small gap between the front teeth (also known as a diastema), they are more widely used where the teeth are either very badly discoloured, such as might be caused through heavy long term smoking, or where the teeth have been chipped or cracked. Veneers offer a long term solution for teeth that have been affected in this way.

Having more attractive teeth should always start with a consultation with a cosmetic dentist. A thorough oral health check will be carried out and a discussion had to understand what you hope to achieve. We will then be able to put a treatment plan into place to give you a great looking smile for the new decade ahead!
