Minor Dental Procedures

Minor Dental Procedures

Taking a look at some of the less invasive treatments that can make a real difference to a smile.

When most people think of a dental visit, they probably think of the more invasive procedures, such as extractions, dental implants and the like.

Very often though, relatively minor problems can be resolved with equally minor, simpler procedures that can make a real difference to our Chelmsford patients’ smiles.

In today’s blog, we will take a look at some of these procedures.

Whilst some fillings can be very large; providing that regular dental checks are maintained, any signs of dental decay can be detected very early on. Even a tiny spot of dental decay will get worse if left, and therefore it is best to remove it whilst small. The smaller the amount of decay, the less of the tooth will need removing. In some cases, fillings can be so small as to not even need a local anaesthetic, although most patients generally prefer this as a precaution. Our dental fillings are available in either amalgam or tooth coloured versions.

Scale and Polish

Those of you who have seen the hygienist at Blue Sky Dental will already know what a scale and polish consists of. For those who don’t, it is, essentially, a professional cleaning that removes hardened bacteria from the teeth and gum line. If not removed, bleeding or sore gums are likely, with eventual gum disease possible too. The treatment involves the removal of the tartar followed by a thorough clean with a high speed brush. This both helps to remove any remaining unwanted residues and also gives the teeth a brighter appearance too.

Cosmetic bonding

Cosmetic bonding uses a composite resin and is usually used for minor repairs to the teeth. An example of this would be where a tooth has chipped. Using cosmetic bonding to restore the shape of the tooth not only creates a nicer smile, but also helps to avoid potential abrasions from sharp edges of the teeth. In cases of a minor diastema (gap between the front teeth), bonding may also be used to build up a tooth to close this gap. More significant diastema are likely to require orthodontic treatment.

Teeth Whitening

Although a bit of an outlier in this group, it is worth mentioning that a teeth whitening procedure is entirely non invasive and pain free. This, combined with its affordability and instant results, makes it one of the most popular and in demand cosmetic dental treatments at our Chelmsford dentists.
