Ask A Chelmsford Orthodontist – Unsightly Braces

A Chelmsford patient asks if dental braces are the only way to straighten teeth.

Today’s question comes from a patient who has decided to take action about a problem he acknowledges should have been addressed a number of years ago.

Q. Hi … When I was in my teens, I was told by my dentist that I needed braces. My brother had these and suffered at school because of the way that they made him look, and I point blank refused to have them because of that. I am now in my mid forties and, quite frankly, my teeth are pretty crooked and I am quite embarrassed by them. I think now that if braces are the only way to resolve this issue, then I’ll just have to put up with them, but as it’s been so long I’m keeping my fingers crossed that there may be new ways to straighten teeth?

Hello and thank you for your query. You will, I suspect, be delighted to hear that whilst dental braces are still the only method to straighten teeth, they have changed so dramatically that you probably wouldn’t even recognise them as such.

There are a number of systems available, some designed to straighten the front teeth only, whilst others correct misalignment across the full arch of teeth. Naturally, we would need to see you for a consultation before we could determine which would be the most suitable in your case. Most modern dental braces do use the traditional approach, using wires and brackets to re-position the teeth. These however, are made from much finer materials that are produced in tooth like shades of colour, rendering them much less noticeable than the traditional metal braces which you are thinking of.

The other method, which may be ideal for you, is one that uses clear plastic trays that fit over the teeth. These are each worn for a short period of time before being replaced with the next in the series. Each tray gradually moves the teeth towards their desired position. The best known of these is called Invisalign and is available at Blue Sky Dental. Whilst it may not be the fastest acting orthodontic system, it more than compensates for this by being removable, enabling you to eat easily and also clean your teeth efficiently.

In addition to its comfort and convenience, Invisalign is virtually invisible to most people whilst being worn, making it ideal for social situations and helping you to feel confident while you are wearing them. In the first instance though, an initial consultation with one of our Chelmsford dentists is needed to determine the best way forward to help give you a smile that you can be proud of.

Please call Blue Sky Dental today on 01245 211070 and we’ll be pleased to make an appointment for you.
